Description
Biophysicochemical Properties
Kinetic parameters: KM=3.6 mM for D-serine {ECO:0000269|PubMed:17088322, ECO:0000269|PubMed:17303072}; KM=1.7 mM for D-proline {ECO:0000269|PubMed:17088322, ECO:0000269|PubMed:17303072}; KM=1.1 mM for D-tyrosine {ECO:0000269|PubMed:17088322, ECO:0000269|PubMed:17303072}; KM=1.5 mM for D-DOPA {ECO:0000269|PubMed:17088322, ECO:0000269|PubMed:17303072}; KM=1.2 mM for D-phenylalanine {ECO:0000269|PubMed:17088322, ECO:0000269|PubMed:17303072}; KM=0.9 mM for D-alanine {ECO:0000269|PubMed:17088322, ECO:0000269|PubMed:17303072};
Catalytic Activity
A D-amino acid + H(2)O + O(2) = a 2-oxo acid + NH(3) + H(2)O(2). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:17088322}.
Cofactor
Name=FAD; Xref=ChEBI:CHEBI:57692;
Function
Regulates the level of the neuromodulator D-serine in the brain. Has high activity towards D-DOPA and contributes to dopamine synthesis. Could act as a detoxifying agent which removes D-amino acids accumulated during aging. Acts on a variety of D- amino acids with a preference for those having small hydrophobic side chains followed by those bearing polar, aromatic, and basic groups. Does not act on acidic amino acids. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:17303072}.
Similarity
Belongs to the DAMOX/DASOX family. {ECO:0000305}.
Subcellular Location
Peroxisome.
Subunit
Homodimer. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:17088322, ECO:0000269|PubMed:18455394}.
